Programs

In the Neighborhood Program, the school serves students in several traditional-style classrooms. These classrooms focus on meeting all students’ academic needs through the use of the Common Core Standards. Teachers use the district-adopted curriculum and emphasize a strong school community.

The Bowman Open Optional Program (BOOP) is a highly competitive lottery program that serves students in teacher teams of multi-age learners. Embedded throughout the program are opportunities for students to collaborate with children of varying ages in learning. These activities include STEAM projects, mentoring, book buddies, living museum, markets, Poetry Slams, plays, Arctic Entries, and speeches.   Teachers believe academics, social skills, and respect are essential.  Real-world opportunities should be integrated into the classroom to make learning engaging and meaningful. A highlight for all students is the mini courses, which are two-day intensives led by community members that offer enrichment activities. The program values communication, creativity, flexibility, cooperation, small- and large-group participation, community service, goal-setting, leadership, and family involvement. The Structured Learning Classroom (SLC) incorporates a variety of evidence-based teaching strategies and curricula to facilitate communication and social skills while teaching grade-level expectations.  The Individualized Education Program (IEP) team determines each student's educational placement after thoughtful, careful dialogue regarding the student's functional and academic needs. Structured Learning is not a lottery program, but a regional program housed at Bowman.
